La Liga Matchday 10, Friday to Monday: the bottom of the table goes first, Atlético de Madrid applies pressure and Barcelona host Real Madrid on Sunday.
The round's thesis
Sunday's Clásico is the lens for reading the whole matchday: Barcelona, top of the table with a perfect record, host third-placed Real Madrid, and everything that comes before (the bottom of the table on Friday and Saturday, Atlético de Madrid at home) is the backdrop that game arrives against.
What is at stake
In the title race, Barcelona have won everything so far, with Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid giving chase. Atlético play on Saturday and will reach Sunday already knowing whether they have closed in on the leaders; if Barcelona win El Clásico, their lead over Real Madrid stops being a contest and becomes a cushion.
In the Champions League places, Betis sit 4th and travel to Celta de Vigo; just behind them, Real Sociedad host Levante that same Sunday. Betis have 19 points and Real Sociedad 16: Betis only lose 4th place if they lose in Vigo and Real Sociedad beat Levante, and even then goal difference decides it, with Betis on 2 against Real Sociedad's 0. Celta de Vigo, in 8th, also have something to play for.
In the relegation fight, Elche, Valencia and Málaga occupy the drop zone and all three play in the first two days, Málaga on Friday and the other two on Saturday. A word of caution when reading the table: Athletic Bilbao and Rayo Vallecano have a game in hand, so their positions don't yet tell the whole story.

Anchor matchBarcelona vs Real MadridSunday, October 25, 17:00
Barcelona come into El Clásico with a perfect record: they've won every game they've played and have the most productive attack in the league, home and away. Real Madrid are 3rd, perform far better at home than away, and the trip to the leaders tests whether their defence holds up on the road. This is the anchor game because it's the only one in which the gap between first and third can shrink in one go or turn into a comfortable lead.

Alavés vs MálagaFriday, October 23, 16:00
Málaga are bottom and still winless this season; they concede plenty of goals per game, home and away. Alavés, in 7th, are on a winless run but do win at home, and they host the bottom side in the matchday opener. If Alavés don't win here, the poor run becomes the story.

Valencia vs VillarrealSaturday, October 24, 13:30
Valencia are second from bottom, in the relegation zone, still without a home win and scoring very little at home. Villarreal are 12th, unspectacular but without their opponents' urgency. For Valencia, this is the kind of game where relegation stops being abstract.

Atlético de Madrid vs Deportivo La CoruñaSaturday, October 24, 16:00
Atlético de Madrid are 2nd, on a winning run and conceding little at home. Deportivo La Coruña are 9th, draw a lot and have yet to keep a clean sheet, which opens the way for Atlético to pick up points again and stay close to the leaders before El Clásico.

Celta de Vigo vs BetisSunday, October 25, 12:15
Betis are 4th and hold the last Champions League spot; Celta de Vigo are 8th, won their last game, are unbeaten in five and are at home. Betis have already shown they can win away, and that is exactly what separates the sides chasing a top spot from those stuck in mid-table.

Real Sociedad vs LevanteSunday, October 25, 14:30
Real Sociedad are 5th, on a good run, and host Levante, 11th, who won their last game after four without a win. It's the game in which Real Sociedad can establish themselves just behind the Champions League places.

The first block
Friday and Saturday set up two battles. The first is at the bottom: Málaga open against Alavés, and on Saturday Valencia host Villarreal and Elche visit Rayo Vallecano, so the relegation zone will already have shifted by Sunday. The second is at the top: Atlético de Madrid host Deportivo La Coruña in Saturday's last game and can put pressure on the leaders before El Clásico. Racing Santander and Espanyol, neighbours in the table with similar records, meet on Saturday and will show who gets out of that pack with some breathing room.
The second block
Sunday and Monday answer what the first day and a half set up. Athletic Bilbao host Getafe early, and Real Sociedad host Levante; Celta de Vigo and Betis decide who gains ground in the Champions League race; and El Clásico, Sunday's last game, pits the leaders against third place with Atlético de Madrid's result already known. The matchday closes on Monday with Sevilla hosting Osasuna, and that result shows whether 6th place holds on to the European spot.

How the Macro Index is computed
The Macro Index measures, from 0 to 100, how much of the analysis is backed by data that came in. It adds up four components, each with its own maximum: data (32), context (27), trends (22) and scenarios (19). This matchday, data came in at 32 of 32, context at 23 of 27, trends at 22 of 22 and scenarios at 19 of 19, for a total of 96 of 100. Market prices never enter the calculation: they are only used to count which games have a published market, and all 10 games this matchday do.
