Round 6 — Série A

Round 6 — Série A
80

Round coverage10 of 10 matches20 of 20 clubs. The whole round is up.

Three clubs own the top of Série A — and all three play this weekend

Six rounds, three teams level at the top. Roma lead on goal difference, Inter and Lazio are glued to them. Cagliari, the surprise, sit just below. This weekend will show whether the balance is real or whether one of them has margin the numbers don't show yet.

The bottom has a different kind of urgency: Bologna and Genoa need to respond at home before the fixture list leaves them no way out. Venezia, without a single point, close the round on Monday against a recovering Atalanta. Saturday opens it; Sunday and Monday decide it.

Standings, results and the fixtures to come are on the full Serie A table.

What the round is playing for

Three teams, one top spot — Roma lead on the fine detail

Roma, Inter and Lazio are level on points after five rounds; Roma hold first place on goal difference

What it changes: Any slip this round hands over the lead without a rival having to win: it's enough for the third team to do better

The game that settles it: Como x Roma

Cagliari in the top four — Juventus still outside

Cagliari are fourth, a point behind the top three; Juventus are seventh and still outside the European places

What it changes: A Cagliari win widens the gap on Juventus and cements the biggest surprise of the season so far

The game that settles it: Cagliari x Juventus

Bologna and Genoa — rock bottom can't wait

Bologna have two points in five rounds, Genoa have one, Venezia have yet to get on the board — all three are in the relegation zone

What it changes: For Bologna and Genoa, both at home this round, slipping up in front of their own fans deepens the crisis before the fixture list turns kinder

The game that settles it: Genoa x Fiorentina

The match the round turns on

After the whistle: What Lazio and Inter do on Sunday — if the top sides win at home while Frosinone lose in Naples, the early-season hierarchy starts to confirm itself.

Saturday: the top waits, the bottom plays now

Genoa open Saturday at home to Fiorentina under an obligation that goes beyond three points. With one point in five rounds, the club needs to show home advantage is worth something — and Fiorentina, also below expectations, aren't usually the sort of opponent who make it easy in games of urgency.

Inter and Napoli play in the same block, but the weight is different. Inter are top of the table and host Parma in a position that's comfortable on paper; what the market will show is how much the club turns that advantage into consistent performance. Napoli, at the Maradona, have sixth-placed Frosinone in front of them — the only Saturday opponent arriving in form and with nothing to lose.

Saturday: the readings

  • Frosinone face a real test Six rounds in, no other stage of the Italian season puts a smaller side in front of a big one this early and this far from home. Frosinone are sixth, Napoli are tenth but playing at home. The game inverts the expected pressure, and the market will show how seriously Frosinone are taken as a candidate for a European place.
  • Inter with the top to defend — Parma with nothing to lose Parma are second from bottom and have already travelled to face bigger opponents without a result; Inter need to win well so as not to give Lazio and Roma the narrative that the top is still wide open. This scoreline goes into the weekend's calculation regardless of what happens in the other games.

What to watch on Saturday

  • Genoa with the crowd and without results Genoa have the fewest points of any side playing at home this round and face a Fiorentina also in a crisis of form A home defeat leaves Genoa on a tightrope before the fixture list brings bigger opponents in the coming rounds

Sunday and Monday: the weekend settles the table

Roma play away at Como, Lazio host Monza, and the two results will redraw the top depending on what Inter did on Saturday. Como are eighth with a positive run, but away from home they haven't confirmed the same level. Roma need to win to keep the lead on goal difference; any slip hands the position over without Lazio or Inter having to do anything extra.

Cagliari against Juventus is the game that carries the most weight for the table this weekend. Cagliari fourth, Juventus seventh — a home win widens the gap and raises the question: do Juventus get into the top four this season? Atalanta close things on Monday hosting Venezia, bottom of the table without a point, with a chance to add a third straight positive result.

Sunday and Monday: the readings

  • Cagliari could redraw the top four this round It isn't common for a side outside the traditional order to reach round six in fourth and then host Juventus with an advantage in the table. Cagliari have made good use of home games; Juventus need a result away to get into the European places. The game decides who is the real favourite for the top four right now.
  • Roma away from home with the lead at stake Playing at Como while Lazio play at home is Roma's structural disadvantage this round. Como are compact and organised when they defend, and Roma have to produce away from home to sustain a lead held on goal difference. A draw would already be useful to Lazio if they win.

What to watch on Sunday and Monday

  • Atalanta recovering — Venezia the minimum test Atalanta have won their last two and host Venezia, who haven't taken a single point this season An Atalanta slip at home against the bottom club would be the clearest sign that the recovery still isn't solid
