ForecastEx vs Gemini Predictions: Fees and Best Fit (2026)

ForecastEx and Gemini Predictions are both regulated US event-contract venues, but they approach prediction markets from opposite directions. ForecastEx is a specialist forecast exchange reached through an eligible futures commission merchant. Gemini Predictions is a native exchange product integrated into a crypto-focused Gemini account with its own developer surface.
The short answer: choose ForecastEx when macroeconomic, central-bank, climate or financial questions are the priority and you value a flat listed fee, broker integration and the variable collateral-based incentive coupon. Choose Gemini Predictions when you want a wider sports, crypto and politics catalog, an integrated Gemini balance, maker-versus-taker pricing and native REST/WebSocket trading APIs. Similar questions on the two platforms remain separate contracts with independent books and settlement rules.

Editorial disclosure: Macro Markets publishes this comparison and operates a crypto-native prediction-market platform. We include Macro Markets later as a disclosed alternative, not as an independent recommendation or a CFTC-designated US exchange. This analysis uses current official broker, exchange and regulator documentation. We did not place synchronized funded orders in matching ForecastEx and Gemini contracts. Fees, promotions, coupon rates, access and liquidity can change. Event contracts can lose the full amount committed. This article is educational, not financial, legal or tax advice.
ForecastEx vs Gemini Predictions: Quick Verdict
ForecastEx is the cleaner specialist venue for customers who already work inside a traditional broker and research scheduled economic data. Gemini is the more complete account-level product for customers who want broad discovery, flexible funding and direct developer access. Neither venue is universally cheaper because order behavior and spread can outweigh the fee schedule.
| Decision factor | ForecastEx | Gemini Predictions | Practical edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange identity | ForecastEx DCM and DCO | Gemini Titan DCM with Gemini Olympus DCO | Separate regulated venues |
| Customer route | Eligible FCM; Interactive Brokers is the prominent affiliated retail route | Integrated Gemini account or eligible intermediary | Existing-account dependent |
| Shared liquidity | None with Gemini | None with ForecastEx | Neither |
| Market emphasis | Economics, central banks, government, climate and financial thresholds | Sports, crypto, commodities, economics, politics, tech, business, weather and culture | ForecastEx for macro; Gemini for breadth |
| Base opening fee at 100 contracts priced $0.50 | $1 through current direct-IBKR pricing | About $0.44 maker or $1.75 taker | Order-dependent |
| Settlement fee | No extra execution fee when simply held to settlement | None under current base schedule | Tie on explicit settlement fee |
| Early exit | Buy the matching opposite contract and pay another execution fee | Submit another trading order and pay the applicable maker/taker fee | Gemini is more conventional |
| Incentives | Variable collateral-based incentive coupon | Conditional maker rebates, liquidity rewards and promotions | Structurally different |
| Orders | Limit; Day, GTC and IOC documented | Limit, stop-limit, GTC, IOC, FOK and maker-only documented in API | Gemini for native controls |
| APIs | IBKR TWS and Web API environment | Native Predictions REST and WebSocket APIs | Gemini for direct venue tooling |
| Funding | Eligible brokerage cash | Gemini fiat balance; selected crypto can be sold into USD | Gemini for flexibility |
| Best fit | Macro researcher and multi-asset brokerage customer | Crypto-oriented active trader or developer | User-specific |
Choose ForecastEx when the exact contract matches your macro view, the opposite-contract exit method is acceptable and broker-level portfolio integration matters. Its current direct-IBKR listed fee is easy to calculate, but the spread and a second execution can erase the apparent advantage.
Choose Gemini Predictions when a native prediction interface, broad event catalog and authenticated trading API matter more than ForecastEx's specialist design. Maker pricing can be lower, but a resting order is not guaranteed to fill. Taker pricing can be higher than ForecastEx's flat fee.

What ForecastEx and Gemini Predictions Actually Are
ForecastEx LLC is a specialist exchange and clearinghouse within the Interactive Brokers Group. The CFTC lists ForecastEx as a designated contract market and registered derivatives clearing organization, both effective June 24, 2024.
Retail customers generally access ForecastEx through a qualified futures commission merchant. Interactive Brokers LLC is the most visible route and is both an affiliate and clearing member. The broker holds the customer account and provides order entry; ForecastEx lists, matches, clears and settles its own contracts.
Gemini Predictions is operated through another legal stack. The CFTC's designation record identifies Gemini Titan LLC as a DCM effective December 10, 2025. The Gemini Olympus record identifies the clearing entity as a registered DCO permitted to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps.
The broader Gemini brand supplies the customer account, crypto services, mobile/web experience and funding integrations. Gemini Titan supplies the exchange and contract rules. Gemini Olympus supplies clearing for supported products. Treat these as related but distinct roles.
Similar questions are not the same contract
Suppose both venues list a question about the next Consumer Price Index release. Before comparing prices, verify:
- headline or core CPI;
- monthly, annual or annualized measurement;
- exact threshold and whether equality counts;
- source agency and release table;
- first publication or later revision;
- last trading and observation times; and
- cancellation, correction and dispute rules.
A ForecastEx CPI contract cannot be closed in Gemini's order book. A Gemini contract cannot be offset on ForecastEx. Price differences may reflect different rules, deadlines, liquidity or participants rather than a risk-free arbitrage.
This also means that volume is not portable. A deep Gemini sports book says nothing about ForecastEx's depth around a Federal Reserve decision. A liquid ForecastEx inflation threshold does not guarantee a Gemini contract at the same strike.
Fees, Incentive Coupon and Gemini Promotions
ForecastEx uses the simpler base schedule. Interactive Brokers' current prediction-market commission page lists no IBKR commission and a $0.01 ForecastEx exchange fee per contract for US direct clients. Introduced, managed and non-US accounts can differ.
Gemini's current Predictions fee schedule uses probability-weighted formulas:
- maker:
0.0175 × contracts × price × (1 − price); and - taker:
0.07 × contracts × price × (1 − price).
Maker orders rest on the book. Taker orders match immediately. A partially matched order can pay taker fees on the immediately executed portion and maker fees if the resting remainder later fills. Gemini rounds fees up to the next cent.
Worked example: 100 contracts at $0.50
| Route | Opening calculation | Illustrative opening fee | Later cost if held or exited |
|---|---|---|---|
| ForecastEx through direct IBKR pricing | 100 × $0.01 |
$1.00 | No new execution fee at settlement; another $1 if an opposite contract is bought to exit |
| Gemini base maker | 0.0175 × 100 × 0.50 × 0.50 |
$0.44 | No settlement fee; a closing trade pays its applicable trading fee |
| Gemini base taker | 0.07 × 100 × 0.50 × 0.50 |
$1.75 | No settlement fee; a closing trade pays its applicable trading fee |
Gemini maker is cheapest in this opening example. ForecastEx is cheaper than the Gemini taker example. That conclusion can reverse after spread, price impact, failed maker execution or an early exit.
Gemini explicitly lists no settlement fee and no membership fee under the current base schedule. ForecastEx does not need a new execution simply because a position reaches settlement. The lifecycle difference appears when closing early: ForecastEx buys the opposite contract, while Gemini submits another trade.
Use the prediction-market fee calculator for position scenarios, then verify the live order preview and current account schedule.
ForecastEx coupon versus Gemini liquidity programs
ForecastEx's variable incentive coupon is based on eligible daily settlement value and the Effective Federal Funds Rate. The current IBKR risk disclosure says it is distributed monthly under member terms.
The rate can change. The member pass-through can change. A short holding period earns only a time-based amount, and a contract that settles at $0 can lose far more than the coupon earned.
Gemini's current builder and liquidity page advertises maker rebates, liquidity rewards and qualifying maker-fee promotions. These incentives have eligibility, market and time conditions. They can be modified or discontinued and should not replace the base fee schedule in a long-term comparison.
The programs reward different behavior:
- ForecastEx's coupon relates to eligible collateral value over time;
- Gemini maker rebates relate to executed liquidity provision;
- Gemini liquidity rewards can relate to the quality of resting orders; and
- a temporary zero-maker-fee offer applies only when the current terms say the trade qualifies.
Do not subtract either program from a fee example unless the exact position, date, account and market qualify.
Orders, APIs and Early Exit
ForecastEx uses an unusual but well-documented contract model. Yes and No are separate buy-only contracts. Interactive Brokers' event-order documentation says event contracts support Limit orders with Day, Good-Till-Canceled or Immediate-Or-Cancel time in force. API quantities use whole contracts rather than cash quantity.
To reduce a ForecastEx Yes position, the customer buys the matching No contract. IBKR nets the opposing positions. The customer does not submit a conventional sell-to-close order on the original Yes instrument.
Gemini uses a native central-limit-order-book workflow. Its prediction order API documents limit and stop-limit orders, GTC, Immediate-Or-Cancel, Fill-Or-Kill and maker-only behavior. Availability in the retail interface can differ from API capabilities, so the signed-in ticket remains the final check.
| Capability | ForecastEx through IBKR | Gemini Predictions |
|---|---|---|
| Contract representation | Separate buy-only Yes and No instruments | Native Gemini Titan outcome contracts |
| Primary priced order | Limit | Limit and stop-limit documented in API |
| Time in force | Day, GTC, IOC | GTC, IOC and FOK documented |
| Maker-only | Not established in current ForecastEx docs | Maker-or-cancel behavior documented |
| Early exit | Buy the matching opposite contract | Submit a closing/reducing order when liquidity exists |
| API route | IBKR TWS and Web API | Native Predictions REST and WebSocket APIs |
| Exchange identifier | FORECASTX in IBKR contract records |
Gemini event and contract identifiers |
| Incentive tooling | Variable collateral coupon | Maker rebates and liquidity programs |
API verdict
Gemini has the cleaner venue-native developer surface. Its Prediction Markets API covers event discovery, market data, order placement, cancellation, history, positions, settled positions, terms, combinations and rewards. WebSocket streams support real-time market and account workflows.
ForecastEx remains strong for customers already using Interactive Brokers automation. The IBKR contract documentation identifies FORECASTX and represents Yes and No through option-style fields. This allows event contracts to sit beside broader portfolio automation, reporting and risk controls.
Gemini wins when a developer wants direct prediction-market semantics and native venue APIs. ForecastEx can win when prediction positions must integrate with an existing multi-asset broker system. Both require permissions, contract-ID discipline, rate-limit handling and reconciliation of partial fills.
Neither platform guarantees an early exit
A ForecastEx offset needs an acceptable offer in the opposite contract. A Gemini close needs an acceptable counterparty in the same book. Maker-only orders can remain unfilled; taker orders can cross a wide spread or multiple levels.
The bid-ask spread guide explains why a displayed midpoint is not a realizable exit. Size every position for the possibility of holding through settlement.
Funding, Markets and Liquidity
ForecastEx funding follows the carrying FCM. Through Interactive Brokers, eligible customers use brokerage cash and manage forecast contracts beside stocks, options, futures, bonds, currencies and other assets. The same account can also display supported contracts from Kalshi and CME, but those venues retain separate books.
Gemini Predictions is integrated into the broader Gemini account. Its transaction terms say an eligible fiat balance can fund a prediction transaction. They also describe ACH, debit card, credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal behaviors, subject to availability, holds and method-specific terms.
A selected crypto balance does not settle the event contract in crypto. Gemini can sell enough digital assets to obtain the USD required for the prediction purchase. That sale can be taxable. It can also succeed while the following contract purchase fails, leaving the customer with USD and price-movement risk.
Gemini therefore offers crypto-account convenience, not token-denominated settlement. ForecastEx offers traditional brokerage integration, not a direct exchange wallet.
Market selection
ForecastEx's strongest identity is measurable macro and public-data questions: inflation, employment, Federal Reserve policy, government finance, housing, capital markets and climate observations. The focus can suit traders who already follow economic calendars, rates and official releases.
Gemini's current Predictions catalog is broader at the category level. It includes sports, crypto, commodities, economics, politics, technology, business, weather and culture. The exchange also operates market-maker and liquidity programs across those categories.
Broad category coverage does not guarantee a better contract. Compare the exact source, threshold, deadline, spread, depth and settlement rule. A highly active Gemini sports market does not prove depth in a niche economic threshold, and ForecastEx specialization does not guarantee liquidity at every strike.
Our ForecastEx vs Kalshi comparison covers another direct-exchange choice. The Gemini vs Interactive Brokers comparison is useful when IBKR's Kalshi and CME routes also matter.
Which platform has better liquidity?
There is no permanent winner. ForecastEx liquidity can concentrate around scheduled releases and widely followed thresholds. Gemini liquidity can concentrate in sports, politics, crypto or markets supported by active incentive programs.
Inspect best bid, best offer, available size, recent trades and depth at the intended quantity. Do not use company-wide crypto volume, brokerage volume or historical promotional volume as a substitute for the current contract book.
Regulation, Settlement and Risk
ForecastEx and Gemini Titan are both CFTC-designated contract markets. ForecastEx and Gemini Olympus have registered clearing roles for supported fully collateralized products. These records help identify the legal entities, rulebooks and oversight structure. They do not insure a customer against a losing forecast.
ForecastEx's risk disclosure states that the correct Yes or No contract receives $1 and the incorrect side receives $0. Gemini likewise offers outcome contracts with predefined resolution criteria and a fixed binary settlement structure for the products compared here.
For every contract, read:
- source agency or objective data source;
- observation date, time and time zone;
- exact threshold, rounding and equality rule;
- whether an initial release or revision controls;
- cancellation and postponement treatment;
- outcome-review or dispute process; and
- expected settlement timing.
Gemini's interface can surface research context, but Gemini's own agreement makes clear that AI-generated context does not determine the contract outcome. ForecastEx's broker tools similarly do not replace the exchange specification. Settlement follows the rulebook and contract terms, not a platform summary or news headline.
Which is safer?
Both venues offer identifiable regulated exchange and clearing structures. ForecastEx adds a traditional FCM account and fully collateralized buy-only contracts. Gemini adds an integrated account, its own exchange/clearing affiliates and direct API surface.
Neither is universally safer. Customers face wrong-outcome risk, illiquidity, cyber risk, operational outages, source-data problems and rule misunderstandings. ForecastEx adds affiliate/member and opposite-contract complexity. Gemini adds crypto-conversion, payment-method and multi-entity account complexity.
Use multifactor authentication, verify the signed-in legal entity, use limits and maximum-size controls and never commit funds needed for near-term obligations. Our guide to prediction-market legality in the US explains why exchange registration does not eliminate every customer, state or contract-category restriction.
Which Platform Should You Choose?
Choose ForecastEx when most of these are true:
- the desired question is a macroeconomic, policy, climate or financial threshold;
- you already have an eligible FCM or Interactive Brokers workflow;
- a flat one-cent listed fee is competitive at your intended size;
- limit-only execution and the opposite-contract exit model are acceptable;
- multi-asset reporting matters; and
- the incentive coupon is a secondary benefit rather than the trade thesis.
Choose Gemini Predictions when most of these are true:
- sports, crypto, politics or broader event discovery matters;
- you already use Gemini and understand the funding method;
- native REST/WebSocket order management is important;
- maker-only, IOC, FOK or stop-limit behavior fits your strategy;
- the maker/taker fee formula is acceptable; and
- you have confirmed whether any promotion applies without assuming it will last.
Choose neither if the contract wording is unclear, the spread is excessive, the book lacks size or a $0 settlement would create financial strain. A no-trade decision is better than forcing a platform winner.
Macro Markets as a disclosed crypto-native alternative
Macro Markets is the intentionally different choice for eligible users who want crypto-native deposits, withdrawals and global prediction-market discovery rather than a traditional US FCM or a crypto account that converts assets into fiat for event contracts.
That design can be relevant when wallet-oriented funding is the primary requirement. It also creates separate diligence around jurisdiction, KYC, custody, supported assets and networks, withdrawal costs, liquidity, resolution sources and disputes.
Because Macro Markets publishes this article, this section is first-party positioning. Macro Markets is not presented as a CFTC-designated exchange or a regulatory equivalent to ForecastEx, Gemini Titan or their clearing organizations. Verify current eligibility and terms independently.
Frequently asked questions
Is ForecastEx cheaper than Gemini Predictions?
Not for every order. At 100 contracts priced at $0.50, ForecastEx's current direct-IBKR opening fee is $1. Gemini's base maker example is about $0.44 and its taker example is $1.75. Gemini lists no settlement fee, while a ForecastEx early exit requires another one-cent-per-contract execution. Spread and fill probability can change the winner.
Does Gemini charge a settlement fee?
Gemini's current base Predictions schedule lists no settlement fee or membership fee. A customer who closes early through another trade pays the applicable maker or taker fee on that execution. Fee schedules and promotions can change.
Does ForecastEx have maker and taker pricing?
The current direct-client IBKR schedule uses a flat $0.01 ForecastEx exchange fee per contract and no IBKR commission. It does not use Gemini's probability-weighted maker/taker formula.
Can ForecastEx and Gemini positions offset each other?
No. They are separate exchanges with independent contracts, books and settlement authorities. Similar questions can behave as economic comparisons, but one position cannot close the other.
Can I fund Gemini Predictions with crypto?
Gemini's terms say selecting a crypto balance authorizes a sale into fiat for the prediction purchase. That conversion can be taxable and may complete even if the subsequent contract purchase fails. The event contract remains USD-denominated.
Which platform has the better API?
Gemini has the cleaner native prediction-market API with authenticated order management and WebSocket workflows. ForecastEx is strong through IBKR's TWS and Web APIs when the event position must integrate with a broader brokerage system.
Which platform has more markets?
Gemini currently advertises more broad consumer categories, including sports, crypto, politics, technology and culture. ForecastEx is more specialized around economics, policy, financial and climate data. The better venue is the one with the correct contract and executable depth.
Is Gemini's zero-maker-fee offer permanent?
No permanent assumption is justified. Gemini currently advertises qualifying maker-fee promotions and liquidity programs with terms and eligibility conditions. Use the base fee schedule for durable comparisons and verify the live promotion before every order.
Final verdict
ForecastEx is the better specialist macro venue; Gemini Predictions is the better native prediction-market platform for breadth and developers. ForecastEx combines a flat listed fee, broker integration and the variable incentive coupon. Gemini combines broad discovery, integrated funding, native APIs, maker-versus-taker pricing and no base settlement fee.
The correct choice remains one contract at one moment. Match the source and deadline, calculate every execution cost, inspect depth and plan for the actual exit method. If the rules or executable price do not justify the risk, do not trade simply because one platform wins the feature table.
