Kalshi vs Macro Markets: Regulated Exchange or Crypto-Native Platform?

Kalshi vs Macro Markets: Regulated Exchange or Crypto-Native Platform?
43

Kalshi and Macro Markets both turn real-world events into tradable outcomes, but they are not interchangeable versions of the same product. Kalshi is a CFTC-designated contract market with a direct exchange account, public order books and US regulatory oversight. Macro Markets is a crypto-native prediction-market platform built around digital-asset funding and global event discovery for eligible users.

Our verdict: Choose Kalshi when a federally regulated exchange, documented fee formula, visible order book and public trading API are your priorities. Evaluate Macro Markets when you deliberately want a crypto-oriented account and funding route, and are comfortable verifying a different jurisdiction, custody model, live fee, network and withdrawal path. Neither platform is always cheaper or more liquid. The exact contract, executable quote, available size and full funding route decide the better trade.

Editorial disclosure: Macro Markets publishes this comparison and is one of the products being compared. We apply the same documentation-first criteria to both platforms, state where public evidence is incomplete and do not present Macro Markets as a CFTC-designated US exchange. This is a documentation-based comparison; we did not place simultaneous matched orders or complete a deposit-to-withdrawal test on both platforms. Event contracts are speculative and can lose the full amount committed. This page is educational, not financial, legal or tax advice.

Kalshi vs Macro Markets: Quick Verdict

The central decision is exchange-first versus crypto-native.

Choose Kalshi if you want the clearest documented US exchange structure. KalshiEX lists the contract, operates the order book and publishes the rules that determine settlement. The same account provides web and mobile trading, public market data and a REST API. Kalshi also accepts eligible users from many countries, subject to identity checks, restricted jurisdictions and local law.

Evaluate Macro Markets if you already use digital assets and want crypto funding to be part of the prediction-market workflow. The platform positions itself around global markets, crypto rails and a hybrid execution design. That can be a better product fit for a crypto-native user, but it creates a separate diligence list: supported asset and network, conversion, custody, jurisdiction, KYC, fees, withdrawal rules and resolution process.

Winner by use case

  • Federally regulated US event exchange: Kalshi.
  • Direct order-book access: Kalshi.
  • Public market-data and trading API: Kalshi.

The products can cover similar events without offering identical contracts

An election, interest-rate decision or football championship can appear on both platforms. Similar titles do not make the positions fungible. The observation time, official source, cancellation rule, tie treatment, threshold and resolution process may differ.

Before comparing a 57-cent Yes price on one platform with 54 cents on the other, match all of these items:

  1. exact event and outcome;
  2. Yes or No side;
  3. close and observation time;
  4. official resolution source;
  5. exceptional-outcome rules;
  6. quantity available at the quoted price; and
  7. every trading, conversion, network and withdrawal cost relevant to the route.

A three-cent screen difference is not an arbitrage when the contracts or costs differ.

Product fit and contract fit are separate decisions

Product fit covers eligibility, account model, funding, custody, interface, API and support. Contract fit covers rules, price, spread, depth and settlement. Kalshi can be the better product for a user while Macro Markets has the more attractive quote on one matched event, or the reverse. A responsible comparison keeps those conclusions separate.

Regulation, Eligibility and Account Structure

The largest verified difference in this Kalshi vs Macro Markets comparison is legal and operational structure.Kalshi's documented role as a CFTC-designated contract market compared with Macro Markets' crypto-native prediction-platform role

The documented role is an important structural difference, but it does not prove which platform has the better live price, fee or liquidity on a specific market.

Kalshi is the exchange

The CFTC record for KalshiEX identifies it as a designated contract market. The CFTC also lists Kalshi Klear LLC as a registered derivatives clearing organization. Kalshi's official company overview says it operates a federally regulated exchange for trading outcomes of real-world events and that market participants set prices.

That role matters because the platform, listing venue and contract rulebook sit in one direct relationship. Kalshi publishes market rules, accepts orders into its exchange and applies the named settlement source. Federal oversight adds public registration, rule and surveillance obligations. It does not guarantee profit, uninterrupted access, a narrow spread or the ability to exit every position early.

Kalshi's eligibility baseline is age 18 or older with identity verification when requested. Its international access guidance says applicants from many countries can trade, while restricted jurisdictions remain subject to the Member Agreement. Product and location restrictions can still apply after an account is approved.

Macro Markets has a different legal profile

Macro Markets describes itself as a global, crypto-native prediction-market platform. Its current Terms of Service identify Macro Markets Predictions Company as the contracting entity and require users to be of legal age, have legal capacity and access the service only where permitted. The Terms also allow identity and location documentation to be requested and prohibit location masking or access from a restricted jurisdiction.

This comparison does not label Macro Markets a CFTC-designated contract market, US futures commission merchant or US brokerage. Readers should not transfer Kalshi's federal regulatory status to Macro Markets simply because both products show event probabilities.

The different profile is not a footnote. It affects the relevant law, customer agreement, complaint path, account controls, custody disclosures and consequences of a location mistake. Before funding, identify the entity serving you and save the version of the terms that applies to your account.

Regulation is one decision factor, not a performance score

Kalshi wins the regulatory-transparency category on the public evidence reviewed. That does not prove its price will be better on a specific market. Macro Markets' crypto-native design does not prove that it is cheaper, more global in practice or more liquid.

Our guide to whether prediction markets are legal explains why platform status, user location and the exact product must all be checked. Do not use a VPN or another tool to bypass either platform's geographic controls.

Crypto Funding, Custody and Withdrawals

Calling this a fiat platform versus a crypto platform would be too simple. Kalshi now supports crypto transfers, but the role crypto plays is different.

Kalshi supports crypto as a transfer rail

Kalshi's official crypto-deposit guide says US and international users can deposit supported assets on supported networks. For US users, Zero Hash processes transfers and converts crypto to and from fiat. Third-party processing and blockchain network fees can apply, and the deposit screen controls the supported asset, network and limit.

Therefore, “I hold crypto” is no longer enough by itself to eliminate Kalshi. An eligible user may be able to start with a crypto wallet and fund a cash-denominated exchange account. That route is not the same as trading an on-chain event token or keeping the prediction position in the deposited asset.

Kalshi's transfer FAQ also documents fiat rails such as ACH, debit card and wire for eligible accounts. Availability differs for international users, and security holds or provider processing can delay withdrawals.

Crypto is closer to the center of Macro Markets

Macro Markets' product introduction presents crypto-native, stablecoin-first settlement as part of the platform architecture rather than only a deposit adapter. Its Terms permit deposits from funds under the user's legal control, including a crypto wallet, and describe cryptocurrency withdrawals to an address supplied by the user.

If the decision is between two crypto-oriented products rather than a US exchange and a crypto platform, use the direct Polymarket vs Macro Markets comparison.

That product direction can reduce friction for someone who already manages digital assets. It also adds failure modes that a dollar-only comparison can hide:

  • sending the correct asset on the wrong network;
  • conversion between the deposited asset and the trading balance;
  • blockchain congestion and network fees;
  • address-entry errors on withdrawal;
  • platform custody while funds remain in the account;
  • additional identity checks before a withdrawal; and
  • asset-price movement before or after the prediction trade.

The Terms say approved methods, limits and possible service fees are shown in the wallet area and can change. Check the live wallet before transferring. A first deposit should be small enough to verify the asset, network, credited balance and withdrawal destination without putting meaningful capital at risk.

Compare the complete money route

Use this route-level test rather than comparing a deposit button:

Step Kalshi question Macro Markets question
Start Do you begin with USD or a supported crypto asset? Which asset and network does the wallet accept now?
Conversion Does the transfer provider convert crypto into cash, and at what disclosed cost? Is the asset used directly or converted into another balance?
Trade What fee, spread and available size appear on the order? What platform cost, spread and available size appear in the live flow?
Exit Can the position be sold at an acceptable executable price? Can the position be closed under the current market design?
Withdraw Which fiat or crypto methods are available to this account? Which asset, address, network, KYC and minimum apply?

The platform with the shortest-looking route can still have the higher all-in cost.

Fees, Markets, Liquidity and Trading Tools

Kalshi provides more public detail about current exchange mechanics. Macro Markets provides a differentiated architecture claim, but several decision-critical values still need live verification.

Fee transparency and an illustrative Kalshi calculation

Kalshi's fee guidance explains that general transaction fees depend on the expected earnings of the contract. Under the general probability-weighted formula used in its published schedule, an immediately matched order is calculated from price and quantity:

fee = round up(0.07 × C × P × (1 − P))

At a 50-cent price, 100 contracts produce a $1.75 general trading fee. Special series, maker fees, promotions and intermediated access can use other schedules, so the current fee page and order preview control.

Macro Markets' public Terms say payment-method service fees, provider charges and currency-conversion costs may apply, while current methods and limits appear in the wallet. We did not find a sufficiently specific public schedule that supports a universal contract-fee calculation comparable with Kalshi's. The honest table entry is therefore verify the live order and wallet, not “free” or “cheaper.”

For either product, use the complete model:

all-in cost = trading fee + spread + slippage + funding/conversion cost + network/withdrawal cost

Use our prediction-market fee calculator for scenario analysis. The bid-ask spread guide explains why a lower displayed fee can lose to a better executable quote.

Markets and execution design

Kalshi lists real-world event contracts across categories such as economics, politics, sports, weather, technology, crypto and culture. Each market has its own order book. A large company-wide volume number cannot establish depth in the one contract you want to trade.

Macro Markets says its event coverage includes elections, macroeconomic indicators, central-bank decisions, sports, technology and geopolitics. Its launch article describes a CLOB-primary, LS-AMM-fallback hybrid: traders use the order book when it has depth, while an automated market-maker design can support thinner markets. Treat that description as a first-party product claim and inspect the live market before assuming the fallback guarantees an attractive quote or unlimited exit liquidity.

Order books, APIs and settlement

Kalshi's current API documentation goes beyond the older REST-only summary. Public REST endpoints expose market data and order books without authentication. Authenticated workflows cover orders and portfolio data; the documentation also includes WebSocket streaming, official Python and TypeScript SDKs, and a demo environment. This makes Kalshi the clearer current choice for a developer or systematic trader who wants self-service documentation and a test path before production.

Macro Markets' launch materials describe REST, GraphQL and real-time access as part of its product direction. Confirm current production access, authentication, rate limits and trading permissions before designing a workflow around that claim.

On either platform, settlement is contract-specific. Read the named source, observation window and edge-case language before entering. The interface's probability is not the legal definition of the outcome. Our beginner guide to trading prediction markets includes a pre-order rules checklist.

A fair live comparison takes five minutes

  1. Open the same event and economically equivalent outcome on both platforms.
  2. Match the close time, source and exceptional-outcome rules.
  3. Record the best executable price and available quantity, not only the last trade.
  4. Preview the full order cost on each platform.
  5. Add the funding, conversion, network and withdrawal costs relevant to your own route.

If any of those fields cannot be matched, describe the products as alternatives, not as two prices for the same asset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Macro Markets like Kalshi?

Both products offer markets tied to real-world events, but their structures differ. Kalshi is a CFTC-designated US contract market with direct exchange order books. Macro Markets is a crypto-native prediction-market platform with a different jurisdiction, custody and funding profile.

Is Macro Markets a regulated US exchange?

This comparison does not present Macro Markets as a CFTC-designated contract market, futures commission merchant or US brokerage. KalshiEX is listed by the CFTC as a designated contract market. Check the current Macro Markets contracting entity and the laws that apply in your location.

Does Kalshi accept crypto?

Yes. Kalshi says eligible US and international users can deposit supported crypto assets on supported networks. For US accounts, a third-party provider converts crypto to and from fiat. The supported asset, network, fee and limit shown in the live transfer flow control.

Which is cheaper, Kalshi or Macro Markets?

There is no defensible universal answer from public fee labels alone. Kalshi publishes a probability-weighted fee schedule; Macro Markets requires checking the live trading and wallet flow. Add spread, slippage, conversion, network and withdrawal costs before comparing.

Which has better liquidity?

Neither platform wins every market. Liquidity changes by event, side, price, time and order size. Compare the quantity actually available at your limit and plan the exit rather than relying on company-wide volume.

Can US residents use Macro Markets?

Eligibility must be confirmed from the current terms and sign-up flow for the user's exact location. Do not infer US access from an English-language website or crypto support. Macro Markets requires users to be in a jurisdiction where the activity is permitted and can apply identity and location controls.

Can international users trade on Kalshi?

Kalshi says users from many countries can apply, subject to the Member Agreement, restricted jurisdictions, identity verification and local law. Available funding methods can differ by region.

Does Macro Markets require KYC?

Its Terms reserve the right to request KYC documents to confirm identity and location and to restrict account access, payments or withdrawals until verification is complete. Crypto-native does not mean anonymous or permissionless in the current customer agreement.

Does Macro Markets use an order book?

Macro Markets describes a hybrid design with a central limit order book as the primary route and an LS-AMM fallback for thinner markets. Verify the current implementation and executable depth on the market you intend to trade.

Which platform is better for developers?

Kalshi has the clearer currently documented self-service stack for REST market data, WebSocket streams, official SDKs, demo testing and authenticated trading workflows. Macro Markets describes API capabilities in its product materials, but developers should verify current access and documentation before choosing it for production use.

Are prices on Kalshi and Macro Markets directly comparable?

Only when the event, outcome, deadline, source, exceptional rules and executable quantity match. Similar titles can represent different contracts. Funding and withdrawal costs can also make equal screen prices economically different.

Final Verdict

Kalshi is the stronger default for regulatory clarity and exchange tooling. It has a verifiable CFTC-designated contract-market role, public contract rules, per-market order books, a documented fee formula and a public REST API. It is the better starting point for users who want a direct regulated exchange relationship or systematic access.

Macro Markets is the more differentiated crypto-native option. Its appeal is not that it is “another Kalshi.” It is the combination of digital-asset funding, global event discovery and a platform architecture designed around crypto-oriented users. That difference is valuable only when the user is eligible and has verified the live asset, network, custody, fee, liquidity, resolution and withdrawal path.

Kalshi supporting crypto deposits narrows, but does not erase, the distinction. On Kalshi, crypto can function as a transfer rail into a cash-based regulated exchange account. On Macro Markets, crypto is closer to the product's identity and operating model. Users should decide whether they need a crypto-native trading environment or simply a way to fund an event exchange from crypto.

Use this checklist before choosing:

  1. Confirm legal eligibility in your current location.
  2. Identify the entity and agreement serving the account.
  3. Match the exact contract rules and settlement source.
  4. Compare executable price and size at the same moment.
  5. Add every trading, spread, conversion, network and withdrawal cost.
  6. Verify the asset and network with a small transfer first.
  7. Plan an early exit without assuming liquidity will exist.

In the Kalshi vs Macro Markets decision, choose Kalshi for the exchange-first route and Macro Markets for a deliberately crypto-native route. Then judge the actual trade independently. Platform fit gets you to the order ticket; contract rules, price and liquidity decide whether the order deserves to be placed.
