Robinhood vs Interactive Brokers Prediction Markets: Which Is Better in 2026?

Robinhood vs Interactive Brokers Prediction Markets: Which Is Better in 2026?
26

Robinhood and Interactive Brokers both place prediction markets inside a broader investment account, but their products are designed for different traders. Robinhood emphasizes mobile discovery, sports and entertainment markets, dollar orders and supported combinations. Interactive Brokers emphasizes professional software, APIs, multi-asset reporting and access to ForecastEx, Kalshi and CME.

The logos alone do not identify the market you are trading. Robinhood Derivatives and Interactive Brokers act as customer intermediaries. A partner exchange lists the contract, supplies the order book and applies the settlement rules. When both apps show the same Kalshi or ForecastEx instrument, they may reach the same underlying liquidity rather than two independent markets.

Our verdict: choose Robinhood if you want the simpler retail mobile experience and its broader consumer-focused event catalog. Choose Interactive Brokers if you want desktop tools, APIs, published venue-specific charges and event positions integrated with a professional multi-asset portfolio. There is no universal liquidity or fee winner; compare the exact exchange, contract and executable order.

We include Macro Markets as a contextual crypto-native alternative, apply the same criteria and do not present it as a CFTC-designated US exchange. This is a documentation-based comparison; we did not place synchronized funded orders or complete matched deposit-to-withdrawal tests on both products. Robinhood vs Interactive Brokers Prediction Markets: Quick Verdict

Choose Robinhood Prediction Markets if you want to find and trade event contracts from a consumer brokerage app, prefer dollar-based opening orders and care about sports markets or supported multi-leg combinations. Robinhood currently limits prediction-market execution to its mobile app. Its web experience can display markets, but it cannot place these trades, and Robinhood Legend does not support them.

Choose Interactive Brokers Prediction Markets if event contracts are part of a professional trading workflow. IBKR provides supported access to ForecastEx, Kalshi and CME through a unified brokerage relationship, with web, desktop, mobile and API tools. It publishes different charges for each venue, so customers can calculate a route-level fee before considering spread and slippage.

The Exchange and Liquidity Question

Robinhood's customer path is generally:

  1. A customer opens an individual brokerage account and applies for Robinhood Derivatives access.
  2. Eligible settled cash becomes available as event-contract buying power.
  3. Robinhood displays an event and sends the order to the exchange identified for that contract.
  4. The selected exchange operates the order book and defines the settlement source.
  5. Robinhood displays the position, proceeds and account history.

Interactive Brokers uses a similar intermediary structure with a more professional interface:

  1. The customer funds and permissions an eligible IBKR account.
  2. IBKR discovers supported products from ForecastEx, Kalshi and CME.
  3. The customer selects a contract through a web, desktop, mobile or API workflow.
  4. The order reaches the named exchange.
  5. The venue's rules, liquidity and clearing structure control the position.Robinhood and Interactive Brokers prediction-market routing and exchange-overlap map

Matching Kalshi or ForecastEx contracts can share an exchange book; Robinhood-only partner routes and IBKR's CME route remain separate.

Robinhood's current event-contract overview identifies Robinhood Derivatives as the customer-facing futures commission merchant and names partner exchanges. Its current settlement documentation also names North American Derivatives Exchange, while a September 2026 Robinhood newsroom announcement describes selected football contracts routed to Crypto.com's prediction-markets platform.

IBKR's current event-contract page names ForecastEx, Kalshi and CME. Those are not one combined exchange. They retain separate contract terms and books even when the questions sound similar.

When both platforms display the same contract

Robinhood and IBKR can both provide access to Kalshi and ForecastEx. If the exchange name and contract identifier match, the two interfaces can point to one underlying exchange book. A price difference on the screens may reflect refresh timing, order size, rounding or customer fees rather than independent liquidity.

Before comparing quotes, record:

  1. exchange and exact contract identifier;
  2. Yes or No side;
  3. event, threshold and observation window;
  4. close and resolution times;
  5. named data source and revision policy;
  6. executable price and quantity; and
  7. complete customer and exchange fee preview.

If these fields match, the platform decision is mainly about account convenience, tools, support, funding and total order cost. Opening positions through both intermediaries does not diversify exchange or settlement risk when both routes reach the same instrument.

When the contracts are independent

Robinhood can display contracts from partner routes that IBKR does not support. IBKR can display CME event contracts that Robinhood may not offer. Even when both platforms ask whether the same economic release, team or price level will produce an outcome, the instruments can differ in threshold, time zone, source, cancellation rule and payout treatment.

A displayed price gap is not automatically an arbitrage. Two contracts must be economically and legally equivalent, and both legs must be executable at the required quantity after fees. Similar titles are only the start of that review.

Robinhood vs Interactive Brokers Fees

Robinhood moved to a probability-weighted customer commission on June 1, 2026. Its current documentation gives this formula:

commission = k × p × (1 − p) × number of contracts

The constant k is 10% without Robinhood Gold and 5% with Gold. Robinhood rounds up to the nearest cent and caps the customer commission at $0.01 per contract. A partner exchange can charge an additional fee that varies by venue and can be up to $0.01 per contract. Both opening and closing trades can create charges.

Because p × (1 − p) is largest near $0.50, Robinhood's uncapped formula produces its highest commission around an even-probability contract. The one-cent-per-contract cap limits the result. Gold can matter more at prices nearer $0 or $1, but a customer should use the order ticket rather than estimating from the formula alone.

IBKR publishes venue-specific prices on its prediction-market commission page:

IBKR route IBKR commission Exchange fee Current listed total per contract
ForecastEx $0.00 $0.01 $0.01
Kalshi $0.01 $0.01 $0.02
CME event contract $0.01 $0.01 $0.02

These are published rates for direct US clients. Advisor, introducing-broker or other arrangements can differ, and IBKR can change the schedule.

Example: 100 contracts at 50 cents

Suppose a customer buys 100 contracts at $0.50:

  • The contract debit is $50 before fees.
  • Robinhood's raw non-Gold calculation is $2.50 and its raw Gold calculation is $1.25, but the one-cent-per-contract cap limits either customer commission to $1. A variable exchange charge can add up to another $1.
  • IBKR's current ForecastEx route adds $1 in exchange fees.
  • IBKR's current Kalshi or CME route adds $2 in combined commission and exchange fees.

This example does not prove IBKR or Robinhood is always cheaper. At another probability, Robinhood's formula can produce a lower customer commission. The selected Robinhood exchange fee can vary. Most importantly, a one-cent worse fill across 100 contracts also costs $1.

Use the complete model:

all-in cost = contract debit + customer commission + exchange fee + spread + slippage + funding friction

Our prediction-market fee calculator can compare order scenarios. Enter the executable quote and quantity, not a last trade or rounded probability.

Liquidity, Orders and Trading Tools

Liquidity belongs to the exact contract on the selected exchange. Neither Robinhood nor IBKR creates an additional central book merely by displaying the contract. IBKR's professional interface cannot merge separate ForecastEx, Kalshi and CME instruments, and Robinhood's partner network does not make similar questions interchangeable.

Compare:

  • best executable bid and ask;
  • quantity at the top price;
  • depth beyond the first level;
  • expected price impact for the complete order;
  • order duration and cancellation behavior;
  • ability and cost to close early; and
  • exchange-specific halts or position limits.

Our guide to the bid-ask spread explains why a last price is not a guaranteed fill.

Robinhood trading workflow

Robinhood currently supports prediction-market execution only in its mobile app. Its trading guide documents contract orders and opening dollar orders. Contract orders can use immediate-or-cancel or good-til-date behavior. Dollar orders are immediate-or-cancel, and the system calculates quantity after price and fees.

Some markets can support fractional contracts or sub-penny execution. Robinhood also offers preset and custom combinations for supported events. A custom combo can include as many as ten legs and trades as one contract. It uses fill-or-kill behavior, so the entire combination fills or cancels. Each added condition can reduce the chance of execution and adds dependence on the exchange's combo quote.

These features make Robinhood attractive for retail discovery, especially around sports. They do not guarantee a better price or an available early close. A combo position cannot be closed one leg at a time.

Interactive Brokers trading workflow

IBKR supports Prediction Markets web, Client Portal, IBKR Desktop, Trader Workstation, IBKR Mobile, GlobalTrader and event-contract APIs. That is the decisive advantage for traders who need larger screens, repeatable order controls, portfolio reporting or programmatic workflows.

The official TWS event-contract documentation uses FORECASTX, KALSHI and CME as exchange identifiers. Developers must preserve the exchange, contract identifier, expiration, strike and side. Matching only the displayed question can send analysis toward the wrong instrument.

IBKR's event orders use limit prices. ForecastEx has a special position mechanic: the customer buys the opposing contract to offset an existing position rather than selling the original side. IBKR nets the paired positions. That workflow is manageable in professional software, but it is less intuitive than a consumer “close position” button.

IBKR is the stronger tools choice. Robinhood is the stronger simple mobile choice.

Funding, Eligibility and Settlement

Robinhood separates event-contract buying power from brokerage and crypto buying power. Sweeps happen automatically, but customers cannot manually move buying power between those account views. Its funding guide says instant deposits may not be available and recommends settled cash for time-sensitive event orders. Standard ACH funding can take one to five business days.

IBKR uses eligible brokerage cash and venue-specific permissions. The customer must have enough collateral for the event position. Currency conversion can apply when the account is not funded in the contract's currency. A multi-asset balance is convenient, but it does not make every dollar immediately eligible for every event product.

Eligibility

Robinhood requires an individual brokerage account, US residency, age 18 or older and approval for Robinhood Derivatives. State and contract restrictions apply. Its current overview says Maryland and Nevada residents cannot trade sports event contracts, and Michigan residents cannot open new sports contracts as of September 9, 2026. The app remains the controlling eligibility check.

IBKR availability can vary by account affiliate, residence, age, venue, product permission and contract category. An account approved for stocks or options is not automatically approved for every event contract.

Do not use inaccurate residency information or location-masking tools to bypass either platform's controls.

Settlement authority and timing

The listing exchange decides the result under its written rules. Robinhood says it cannot override an exchange outcome. IBKR likewise provides access rather than replacing ForecastEx, Kalshi or CME as the rule authority.

Read the source, threshold, observation time, time zone, correction policy, cancellation treatment and review procedure before trading. A sports app, news headline or AI answer is not authoritative when the contract names a different source.

Robinhood says winning proceeds generally become available for withdrawal within one business day after settlement, although weekends, holidays and exchange processing can extend timing. IBKR timing depends on the venue and account process. In either product, an event ending does not mean funds are immediately withdrawable.

Which Platform Should You Choose?

Choose Robinhood when most of these are true:

  • you want a consumer mobile experience;
  • sports, entertainment or supported combo discovery matters;
  • opening a position by dollar amount is useful;
  • you already keep settled cash in Robinhood; or
  • you prefer a guided retail flow over professional software.

Choose Interactive Brokers when most of these are true:

  • event contracts belong beside a larger multi-asset portfolio;
  • desktop, TWS or API access matters;
  • you want published venue-specific charges;
  • ForecastEx, Kalshi and CME discovery fits your strategy; or
  • professional limit-order and reporting tools outweigh interface simplicity.

Frequently Asked Questions and Final Verdict

Can Robinhood and Interactive Brokers show the same prediction contract?

Yes. Both currently document access to Kalshi and ForecastEx. If the exchange and exact contract identifier match, the interfaces can reach the same underlying book and settlement rules. Compare customer charges, tools, funding and support rather than counting separate liquidity.

Is Interactive Brokers cheaper than Robinhood?

Not universally. IBKR currently lists a one-cent total charge per ForecastEx contract and two cents per Kalshi or CME contract for direct US clients. Robinhood uses a probability-weighted customer commission capped at one cent per contract, plus an exchange fee that can be up to one cent. The executable price and spread can outweigh either fee schedule.

Can I trade Robinhood prediction markets on a computer?

Robinhood currently allows customers to view prediction markets on the web, but execution is limited to the mobile app. Robinhood Legend does not currently support them. IBKR offers web, desktop, mobile and API workflows.

Which platform is better for sports prediction markets?

Robinhood is generally the stronger retail sports interface because it emphasizes sports discovery and supports selected preset or custom combinations. Availability depends on state, exchange and contract. IBKR is stronger when professional tools and cross-asset workflows matter more than a consumer sports hub.

Which is better for APIs?

Interactive Brokers. Its TWS and Web API documentation covers event-contract discovery and orders for supported venues. Robinhood does not currently document a comparable public customer execution API for prediction markets.

Does Robinhood Gold always reduce prediction-market fees?

Gold halves the constant in Robinhood's probability-weighted commission formula, but the one-cent-per-contract cap can make both Gold and non-Gold calculations reach the same maximum around some prices. Check the complete order preview before trading.

Who determines settlement?

The exchange listing the specific contract. Robinhood and IBKR are customer intermediaries. Kalshi, ForecastEx, CME or another named partner applies its own contract terms and source.

Final verdict

Robinhood is the better fit for eligible retail customers who prioritize mobile simplicity, consumer event discovery, dollar orders and supported combinations. Interactive Brokers is the better fit for experienced traders who prioritize desktop software, APIs, multi-asset reporting and professional venue access.

The better trade remains contract-specific. If both interfaces identify the same Kalshi or ForecastEx contract, compare the account and all-in order cost. If the venues differ, compare the instruments as separate markets.

Regulation does not guarantee profit, liquidity or an early exit. Either position can settle at zero, and a thin or halted order book can make closing expensive or impossible.
